After Book Cover Re-Design
Publication Re-design
I wanted to create this cover redesign of Anna Todd’s book, After, which focuses on hardships in relationships, to pop out on the shelf compared to others.
I was set on designing with abstract patterns but wondered how I would convey the message of such toxic love. My first step in solving this brief was finding a unique balance of all the different elements that belong on the dust jacket itself.
I created a non-photographic book cover that shows the push and pull relationship of Hardin and Tessa, the main characters. Hardin's ongoing theme was having mental breakdowns and breaking things, so I thought a collage would do the book justice.
My book cover is worth sharing because…
it depicts love and relationships in an abstract way that everyone can connect to. There are now no skin tones on the cover, which makes the book relatable to anyone. Appearing on the cover as two halves that are trying their hardest to connect, meshing together but repelling simultaneously. All the while, both sides are missing a piece, which symbolizes missing each other. Developing this solution involved reading the books themselves and researching what people think the main themes of them are. The overwhelming theme of the book is how in love Hardin and Tessa are with each other.
